This course is concerned with choosing one’s own individual approach from the many possibilities for artistic expression, and finding an appropriate form for the realisation of one’s ideas. During the working process we will try out various techniques in an attempt to arrive at an optimal connection between content and method.

We will experiment with combinations of various printing techniques, instruction being given where necessary. All varieties of intaglio will be used – drypoint, line-etching, aquatint, soft-ground etching, lavender technique, liftground, etc. We will make photo transfer prints without using light exposure or chemicals; this process can be carried out with an ordinary gravure press. High-pressure process and simple planographic variants may also be used.

The experience gained in the process will be discussed individually and in groups, in order to examine, change or broaden previous ideas of artistic practice. Students will then develop their own projects, using printmaking techniques.

The main aim of the course is to find a form of expression suitable for each individual subject, and to consider ideas arising from the choice of printmaking as a medium.
