As early as the 1950s, the Situationists advocated getting deliberately lost in (unfamiliar) cities to expose onself to new discoveries, experiences and encounters. They called this way of rambling “dérive”. “For me, nothing is better than wandering around in a strange city, not knowing what might be hidden around the next corner,” says Jermolaewa. “I quite deliberately have no studio, and create many of my works outdoors – sometimes right out my front door, sometimes on my travels.”
The artist works primarily in the media of photography, video and installation, which she uses to analyze the connection between social functions and frames of reference in everyday life. Her works often focus on human nature and the basic condition of human existence.
