The primary purpose of this course is working with analogue film material. Since the 1990s, independent film laboratories have been organised worldwide, reflecting a need to reappropriate the process – standardised by the industry – of developing and editing film. Independent developing offers the basis for both creative and economic freedom.
In this course, we will offer instruction in handling the 16mm camera, as well as experimenting with non-camera film techniques. The filmed material will be developed manually in the dark-room, and we will show how the images can be influenced during this process. In the ensuing montage, the emphasis will be on the relation between image and sound. It is important, however, that this should not be regarded as a purely formal exercise, but that film should be understood as a means of communication, and used for personal or political narratives.
During production, the films will be projected in their various stages and discussed in the group as well as individually. Independent short films can be realised here, but readiness for mutual help and collaboration in filmmaking is essential.
The aim is for each student to achieve an individual language of filmic narrative, on the basis of manual work, experiment, and the specific aesthetic of the material.
