Christoph Draeger has spent the past twenty years documenting and commenting catastrophes. His work deconstructs images that have branded themselves into
the collective unconscious, by presenting them in an
unusual way.
A strong urge to break out from catastrophe scenarios in the studio and to concern himself with the real world led Draeger to travel to the scenes of catastrophe shown in the media, at a time when, years later, they had sunk into oblivion. The resulting photo series entitled Voyages apocalyptiques – begun in 1994, now 92-strong and ongoing – shows unspectacular views of villages, landscapes, cities and houses. The captions, however, evoke in us memories of past catastrophes: Lockerbie, Hiroshima, Kaprun...
In his Lunch Talk, Draeger will discuss his current Tsunami project in relation to Voyages apocalyptiques and the idea of a nomadic studio, developed from the medial possibilities offered by laptop, camera and storage disc.
