In this course we will experiment with different printing techniques. All varieties of intaglio may be used and combined – drypoint, line-etching, open etching, aquatint, soft-ground etching, lavender technique, etc. We will produce photo transfer prints with an ordinary gravure press, using neither light exposure nor chemicals. High-pressure process and simple planographic variants may also be used, as well as carborundum printmaking, production of monoprints or further (manual) processing of prints.

The focus is on the combination of medium, printing and creative decisions in the course of the artistic process. As soon as the ideal medium and process has been chosen for realising an idea, the processes inherent in the medium will influence progress. Thus moments of inspiration will develop as we follow the “voice of the medium”. Later, manipulation processes and “controlled chance” come into play.

Our aim is to try out artistic production strategies which combine the dynamic between content and technique in the working process in order to find an ideal form for one's own concept. Experiences with the various processes will be examined in individual and group discussions, and previous ideas on artistic practice questioned, altered or expanded.
