Using excerpts from their documentary series in the works cinéma copains will discuss the role of artistic and social commitment in the self-determined creation of an urban life-world. In Palermo, the cooperative I Sicaliani are working to re-establish public space against the background of ghettoisation and mafioso structures, and lately  the transformation of the district into luxury apartments.

In Hamburg, a broad alliance of initiatives has founded the movement Right to the City, to oppose the specifications laid down by bureaucratic urban planning. Here artistic practice comes into play with the ambivalent task of representing the demand for a say in the use of public space, without being co-opted as a “creative class” promoting strategic locations.
