The Untersberg quarry is a very special place; the stone it has provided for centuries has played a major role in the architecture and cultural shaping of Salzburg. It is in a way an “other space”, a “heterotopia” (Michel Foucault), governed by independent rules.

The participants, who will live and work there for four weeks, will follow their individual paths from the quarry via the stone right up to the art-work, the space-time co-ordinates being set by the quarry itself and duration of the course.

We will explore the history and the present of both quarry and sculpture, focusing on the current event. We will consider the significance of stone sculpture in art production today as well as in the art world in general, since now only very few artists actually work with stone. Thus the course will also include individual exploration of the topicality of quarry and stone as site and material for art.

Participants will develop their ideas and subjects in group discussions and individual conversations, going on to find the appropriate methods and techniques for realising their works. Stone sculpture as a technique will be taught and discussed, though other media, such as drawing, photography, video, sound, etc., will also have a role to play.
