Tomasz Kowalski is a painter who describes himself as a “realist of the self” – in his work, to a large extent figurative, he tries to describe in a realistic manner the inner processes of the mind, and the spiritual language of daily-life objects. Influenced by the Derridean notion of hauntology, Kowalski activates the vagaries of childhood. He examines nostalgia as a pattern, evincing an enigmatic form of fragmented and anachronistic memory outside the confines of historical and material time.

In the presentation of his work, Tomasz Kowalski will talk about his production process and the wide range of his inspirations. Starting from classics such as Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, George Grosz and Otto Dix, he will move to more ambiguous sources: Thomas Pynchon’s novels, Gamelan music and Max Planck’s scientific theories.
