The focus of this course is stone sculpture and exploration of how contemporary artistic formulation is possible in this medium. The Untersberg quarry, which has provided the so-called "Untersberg marble" for centuries, offers ideal conditions for different approaches to this material. Participants live and work for four weeks directly on site, thus gaining an idea of the dimensions and the complex operations involved in quarrying, both past and present.
As they work, participants will learn that stone, despite its resistance, is a perfectly malleable material in which a personal form of expression can be developed. Individual advice and technical expertise will accompany the creative process; insights gained through working will be addressed, and possibilities for further artistic development discussed.
Although the emphasis lies on stone sculpture and training in relevant techniques, support is offered for interdisciplinary working methods. Thus drawing, photography, video, etc. will also be dealt with in the course.
