Ellen Harvey presents various of her public interventions, both permanent and temporary, touching upon such issues as public expectations for the art experience, performing the role of “artist” in public, the relationship between official public art and graffiti and other street art, differences between various kinds of “public” spaces and the responsibilities of the artist when making permanent additions to public space. Projects to be discussed include Harvey’s New York Beautification Project where she painted landscapes without permission over graffiti-covered sites in New York City, and her recent project Repeat where she destroyed a church to create an alternative public gathering-space for the village of Bossuit in Belgium.
