There is a fine distinction between standpoint and perspective. The former denotes the position from which we observe something; the latter the view of something further away. Interestingly enough, whereas in film, a "point-of-view" shot records a scene through the eyes of a particular character, a "point de vue" in garden architecture and urban planning is a focal point at the end of a sightline. Kokoschka considered that "seeing" had more to do with one's approach to the world than with the actual visual perception of a thing. Together with Elisabeth Schmirl and Stefan Heizinger, we will explore Salzburg along perspective sightlines of streets, in pictorial visions and filmic views, and discuss what approaches lie behind these diverse viewpoints.
