A new series of Till Megerle’s drawings shows grotesq human figures tangled and wedged together, against a background of German suburban gardens. The protagonists’ gender, intention and style of clothing are all equally equivocal. In mediaeval costume or dressed as rappers, the figures alternate between violence and carnivalesque exuberance. Corporeality and social dynamics are also portrayed in other series by Megerle. The vocabulary he uses in his drawing comes from the Renaissance, 19th-century caricature and other styles. Parallel to the contentual level, this openness to diversestyles of drawing raises questions about the medium of drawing: when you draw, how do you speak – and who is speaking?
