The purpose of this publication is to mark the 60th anniversary – and the steadily increasing attractiveness – of the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts. The history of this institution is subjected to a critical assessment in a comprehensive essay by Martin Fritz, who traces the development of the Summer Academy from its inception under Oskar Kokoschka and Friedrich Welz, through the ensuing periods under directors Hermann Stuppäck, Wieland Schmied and Barbara Wally, right up to the present day. His essay offers the first precise analysis of the years 1963/64, when Hermann Stuppäck took over from co-directors Oskar Kokoschka and Friedrich Welz, and Stuppäck's subsequent period as director. Fritz also addresses the question of how Oskar Kokoschka, a vehement opponent of National Socialism, and Friedrich Welz, a profiteer of the same system, were able to collaborate so efficiently from 1953 until 1963, and looks into how Hermann Stuppäck, former highest NS cultural official in Austria, managed to become successor to Kokoschka and Welz. For Martin Fritz, "he profited during his years in Salzburg by that general social disavowal which remains the scandal of Austria’s post-war history".
A fictive interview by Hildegund Amanshauser with Oskar Kokoschka uses excerpts from letters, speeches and diaries to explore the (hi)story and the intention of his "School of Vision" and the intention behind it. Former students from six decades tell of their personal experiences and reveal the significance of the Summer Academy in their individual careers.
A series of photographs brings to life the six decades of artistic production, offering insights into the history of various artistic working methods, technical equipment, the function of models, the organisation of the opening, etc. The result is a pictorial narrative of everyday life in the Summer Academy.
The authors:
Hildegund Amanshauser (b 1955 in Salzburg) studied History of Art Classical Archaeology and Philosophy in Salzburg and Vienna, and has been director of the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts since 2009. She has published widely on modern and contemporary art.

Martin Fritz (b 1963 in Klagenfurt) studied Law, and has worked as organiser, curator, project leader and journalist in the fields of art, theatre and film. He recently curated the exhibition Beziehungsarbeit – Kunst und Institution [Relationship work – art and institution] in the Vienna Künstlerhaus.
