Is the city still a “public space”? Where does the publicsphere start and the private sphere end? If the border between them is unclear, what happens to “art in public space”?
Digitisation has made traditional physical borders – doors, fences, curtains – obsolete. The old laws of nationstates are being challenged by the Internet, which eludes territories, while secret state spying spreads. The pillars of public life – mass media, culture (films, music, books), even shopping – have been shaken by downloading and sharing.
While considering digital civic space, this lecture focuses on photography (from the demise of analogue photojournalism archives, like the Black Star Agency, to the rise of “selfies”). Theories of public space (from Abbé Grégoire to Richard Sennett) will be addressed along with public art works (Elin Wikström, Seth Price, Katharina Grosse, among others).
