2012 Course programme of the Salzburg International Summer Academy of Fine Arts

    24.01.2012

"To jump into the abyss, only to resurface" (after Milena Dragicevic) is the motto of the 2012 Summer Academy course programme. It refers to the current social and political situation, in which many people have the feeling that they are hovering on the brink of disaster. It is also a metaphor for artistic production, which always involves taking a plunge, in the hope of resurfacing immediately. At the Summer Academy, the course structure provides a safety net that offers participants the opportunity of plumbing the depths, of treading new ground and embarking on new ventures.

Outstanding artists from India, Brazil, Cuba, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Poland, Croatia, England, Germany, Austria and other countries will direct 22 courses of between 1 and 4 weeks in Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Alte Saline Hallein and the Kiefer quarry in Fürstenbrunn.

These are some highlights. Stealing from the best – this is the title of Katrin Plavcak's 2012 "course in art forgery". Olav Westphalen (aka Rattelschneck, together with Marcus Weimer) directs a course about cartoons, humour and innovative actions, and documenta 13 artists Shaina Anand and Ashok Sukumaran take students through a Rough Guide to the Media Arts. Katharina Sieverding, doyenne of German photography, returns after a three-year break. Manfred Pernice, currently probably the best-known German sculptor, will be teaching here for the first time. Tania Bruguera, participant in documenta 11 and in numerous biennials worldwide, calls the method she will introduce in Salzburg "Political Timing Specific"; here the work of art correlates with and comments on current political conditions.
