For some years now, the catch-phrase "artistic research" has been in circulation, though its actual significance is not at all clear. Since the 1990s we have increasingly observed artists whose work is based on research, and whose findings are contained in their work; there are other artists who make a contribution to various fields of research, such as contemporary history. In the course of the Bologna Process, art academies are also increasingly developing programme for "artistic research", partly to access specific funds. There is still, however, no consensus on what artistic research is supposed to be. Is it a new genre? An artistic method or technique - how does artistic research differ from scientific research? Here, four Summer Academy teachers who are working on very diverse artistic research projects and a philosopher discuss their approaches to this subject.
