    Martin Schmidl

Martin Schmidl works in the fields of drawing, artistic documentary projects and cultural research. Drawing is the basic method from which he plans his various types of work. The purely drawn projects take drawing as the raw material for developing publications and installations. His main interest lies in the fields of documentation, statement and caricature.

In 2004, 2006 and 2009, he published books of drawings with Verlag Walther König (uni-ball eye mitsubishi I-III). Using criticism of specific design concepts of exhibitions, he researches and writes on the exhibitions held in the former Dachau concentration camp since 1945 (Postwar Exhibition Design, to be published in 2010). He was responsible for the overall planning of publications and media publicity for the international exhibition Skulptur Projekte Münster 07.

Martin Schmidl studied painting, graphic arts and communication design in Munich, Karlsruhe and the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main. Since the late 1990s he has taught at various schools of art, including the Merzakademie/Stuttgart, Kunstakademie/Munich, School of Art/Newcastle, Kunstakademie/Münster and International Summer Academy/Salzburg. In 1998 he was a founder-member of the artists' group finger, where he ran a project room for art during the 1990s.

Martin Schmidl (b 1962) lives in Aachen.
