Today, Hildegund Amanshauser, head of the ISBK, questioned artist Hubert Scheibl who is holding the class "Painting, Photo and Film" at the Saline Hallein about his way of seeing and working to a backdrop of chirping cicadas "to create some warmth", as he said. At first a bit shy, the artist warmed up quickly and told the story of his artistic development, assessed the art scene in Vienna in the 80ies and explained how it was on the one hand liberating, but also a bit sad to not belong to a particular circle but to stand on his own, with his own way of perceiving and acting.
He also comes to the painted images' aid, stating that painting is in no way dead as "the image has a body, a presence, it's something that has happened and left it's traces, a document filled with time that is felt on a deeper level than just the formal one... and it cannot be reproduced."
The class and their teacher will be holding an open day in the Saline at Hallein on the 30th of July, presenting their works. I for one will be there to take a look, and to maybe catch some more of the tunes the artist played today once the talk was over. mp
