Nancy Adajania

Nancy Adajania recommends pause, reflection and revision during curatorial practice. Participants of her curatorial class will compile their own Warburgian "Mnemosyne Atlases" consisting of images and critical annotations. Through a shift in temporality, they would be able to experience the meaning of curatorial pause, rather than always being in the autopilot mode of executing a project. Her one-week-course will take place at Hohensalzburg Fortress from 19 to 24 August. Adajania was co-artistic director of the recently ended 9th Gwangju Biennale. In 2011 she was lecturer at our Global Art symposium in Salzburg.

Norbert Bisky

German painter Norbert Bisky gives a two-week-course at Hohensalzburg Fortress from 29 July to 10 August, which deals with the dynamic field between figure and abstraction. The aim is to experience this "conflict" between representation and free expression not as a contradiction, but as a valuable addition to the possibilities offered by painting. Bisky himself attended two classes of Jim Dine at Salzburg Summer Academy in the mid-nineties. Currently, his work is included in the show Flying at Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin.

Charlotte Cullinan and Milena Dragicevic

This is entirely new. Milena Dragicevic and Charlotte Cullinan will give a “twinned” course in painting at Alte Saline Hallein from 22 July to 10 August. These separate twin classes will be working adjacent to one another yet will be using reverse guidelines and methodologies – starting with opposite positions and ending with a multitude of possibilities. Dragicevic’s and Cullinan’s works recently were on view in the exhibition Recent British Painting at the GRIMM Gallery in Amsterdam.

"Adventskalender"

Summer time seems far away while odours of Glühwein, cruller and incense dominate Salzburg. Nevertheless, we have been working hard on next year’s programme. All detailed course descriptions will be available online here before the end of this year. Applications then will be accepted by 15 May 2013.
Each day in December, like in an “Adventskalender”, we will present briefly one of the next year’s teaching artists on this blog.

Dahlia Maubane's photographic study is online

Dahlia Maubane, Photographer in Residence at this year's Summer Academy, during her two-week's stay in Salzburg explored the students' life in the Academy and in their homes. In a comparative photographic study she investigated personal spaces of the students in relation to their working environment and artworks. See the result here
