If you happen to be in Basel, please join the opening of Hanspeter Hofmann's exhibition "Chemische Bilder" tonight (3 April, 6 pm) at STAMPA Gallery. Hofmann will teach "How to paint" at this year's summer academy from 6 to 25 August.
Performing Recalcitrance, a week-long public programme TAKING PLACE at Kungl. Konsthögskolan | Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm STILL UNTIL March 30, 2012, has been conceptualized and programmed by Olav Westphalen and Stefanie Hessler. Olav Westphalen will teach "a course on cartoons, jokes, and innovative actions" at this year's summer academy.
Performing Recalcitrance comprises performances, lectures and workshops. It is a symposium, festival and meeting point for discussion. It serves as the public culmination of a thematic cluster of courses and academic events around recalcitrance, which are being held throughout the academic year at the Royal Institute of Art.
While "resistance" and "revolt" are commonly employed as positive terms, "recalcitrance" has overwhelmingly negative connotations. The current definition of the word "recalcitrance" dates back to the 17th century (Fr. récalcitrant, lit. "kicking back," 17c.–18c.). It describes a stubborn, obstinate, at times even passive-aggressive or lazy attitude. Nevertheless, it seems to be an appropriate description of the nature of certain current social and political confrontations.
Juan A. Gaitan, together with Maria Lind, will teach the curatorial course this year at Summer Academy. These days, he is concerned with a research trip to the United Arab Emirates, effected through Radio 22, a web radio station that focuses on socially and politically engaged forms of cultural production. In partnership with The Pavilion Downtown Dubai, Art Dubai has invited Juan A. Gaitan and Rabat's L'Appartement 22 founder Abdellah Karroum – together they form the collective The Curatorial Delegation – to present Radio for Example (R22-Dubai), a live transmission of mobile conversations with leading artistic practitioners, recorded on the move, around Dubai, during the week of the fair.
Christoph Draeger's course will be on art and media, with the main emphasis on collage, investigating the relation of construction, destruction and reconstruction in image production. Draeger's solo-exhibition (together with Heidrun Holzfeind) "Tsunami Architecture" has just opened at OK Centrum in Linz and will be on view until April 29. Christoph Schäfer will teach how to use drawing as a "desiring machine" for constructing worlds of one's own. For his next exhibition "raumsichten", the new episode of "kunstwegen" that will open on May 4 near Nordhorn in Germany, Schäfer will contribute a three-piece installation dealing with the tension of public, private and common spaces.
