"Abstraction forever!"

That's the central message of Rebecca Morris' Manifesto about abstract painting, which she read in the beginning of her lunch talk yesterday at Hohensalzburg Fortress. About 50 students came to listen to her while she was talking about working processes, her influences and what motivates her to go ahead with her work.

"Sometimes you need to get through a hard, long working process...failure is quite an important part in the life of an artist..." (Rebecca Morris)

She realized soon that photorealistic painting was "just not her style" and she is convinced that the paintings she created at the age of five have been some of her best abstract works, very similar to her recent paintings ...

Photographer in Residence: Thandile Zwelibanzi

The young South Afican photographer Thandile Zwelibanzi is the Summer Academy's first photographer in residence. He  has been chosen in copperation with Market Photo Workshop, Johannesburg South Africa, from which he graduated and Camera Austria, Graz.

Thandile Zwelibanzi's work explores tensions and transitions in South Africa through the medium of the people that live there. With a sensitive ethnographic eye, he seeks out scenes from daily life and captures them subtly and suggestively. He is fascinated by movement, change and stagnation, and by the way these can be present simultaneously in a single person. His interests take him into the city and the townships, where he makes a study of a variety of people, such as street vendors or body-builders.

He will be in Salzburg from August 16 to August 27 and give a lunch talk on August 19 at 1 p.m. at the Alte Saline Hallein.
