The 2010 evening discussions and lectures focus on the comprehensive theme of >artistic techniques<, according to the original sense of techne, and thus including artistic procedures and methods.

The history of art and art academies in the 20th and 21st centuries shows that since the advent of concept art, artistic techniques in the narrower sense of painting, graphic arts, stone sculpture or nude drawing disciplines have increasingly become obsolete, especially in the context of western culture. What techniques, then, have replaced the traditional ones? Can we still speak of artistic techniques? Are there specific artistic methods, or is artistic work now characterised by the possibility of inventing new methods and procedures? Performance, installation, video art, social and political intervention – does it make sense to analyse and teach these genres under the heading of artistic techniques? What artistic methods fulfil the demands of the relatively new field of artistic research? These are only a few of the questions to be dealt with in the discussions and lectures.

Starting from a wider concept of performance – which includes conceptual performance, performative installation, videos and photographic works, staged and dramatic productions as well as performative speech acts or gender performance – students will develop their own performances according to personal interests.

Students are free to choose whether the individual work presented at the end of the course is an outline for a performance, a film or photographic work, a dramatic concept or a live performance.

Daschner sees the final exhibition as a kind of salon, allowing live performances or readings as well as works hung on the walls or standing in the room.

Katrina Daschner will give a performance course from August 16 to 27 2010.

Rabih Mroué has cancelled his course, unfortunately. We are looking for another performance artist, dancer etc. to hold a performance course at the same time …

The photography classes  will be directed by the Australian artist Destiny Deacon, and the distinguished Austrian photographer Elfie Semotan together with Roberto Ohrt, the writer and art historian known primarily for his pioneering research into the Situationists.

Destiny Deacon's workshop will encourage the participants to tell stories about what's in and around them by using what they can find or make where they are - from documentary photography to shamelessly mixing fact and fiction, objects, places and people hunted and gathered from inner and outer landscapes ... The aim is to make truthful images combining imagination, observation, illusion and the everyday.

Elfie Semotan's course will focus on exploring the extremes of photography, with special interest in the interplay between exaggeration and negation. These two concepts will be dealt with by considering topics such as superartificial, dirty, trash, non-photo, etc. The first week will be focussed on light, the second on fashion photography.
